Thoughts from Psalm 32


Psalm 32 NASB
vv 1-2
"How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered! How blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity,
And in whose spirit there is no deceit!"

God is with those he forgives. Forgiveness is free for us but was costly for Jesus.

We don't have to be perfect, thank God! But we do have to be honest.

vv 3-5
"When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away
Through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;
My vitality was drained away as with the fever heat of summer. Selah. I acknowledged my sin to You,
And my iniquity I did not hide;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord”;
And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah."

Sin (as well as worry, fear) spill over from mind and heart into our bodies, in which we feel their effects. Listen to your body. It isn't designed to sin (or worry).

vv 6-7

"Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You may be found;
Surely in a flood of great waters they will not reach him. You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble;
You surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah."

God is available. Let godly (those oriented towards God) people pray. Storms won't harm them.

vv 8-9

"I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go;
I will counsel you with My eye upon you. Do not be as the horse or as the mule which have no understanding,
Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check,
Otherwise they will not come near to you."

God wants to be our personal teacher. Ploughing animals only obey the tug of a rope. Little children live by commands. But we are to become people of understanding, who learn and affirm the healthiness of God's way of living.


vv 10-11

"Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
But he who trusts in the Lord, lovingkindness shall surround him. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous ones;
And shout for joy, all you who are upright in heart."

The self-reliant bring sorrows into their lives. But the one who trusts God lives in his love, and is glad (even in sorrows).

"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you." (Prophet Isaiah, The Old Testament of the Bible) In a normal neighbourhood of a built up city, pushing to conform all that are in it, to a uniform existence, a determined plant could nonetheless "do its thing." So can a determined human. But personal strength of will, or unusual wisdom, won't by themselves give you the edge in the battle for a heart that "marches to the beat of a different drummer," serene in its inner tranquility. Only a person who enjoys time with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, can live in the midst of normalcy, and engage with life as it is, from a place of such security, that can only be described as "other worldly," while the person is actually very able to understand, and live well in, this world. Stable and growing, they flower and bear fruit. Rooted deeply in God, they are not shaken.

Counting the Cost of Not Being a Disciple

"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?" (Luke 14:28) "The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing." (Proverbs 10:28) Is Christianity so hard that it is left (mostly) untried, as GK Chesterton (who wrote the Father Brown detective series a century ago) said? It does seem hard, because it is inconvenient to not fit in with others, and to choose restraint over indulgence, and prayer over taking control, etc. That's why even Jesus himself likened the choice to follow him to a property developer who has to budget carefully before building, what with contractors always coming in over what they quote to to you and all! "Red sky at night, shepherds' delight, red sky in morning, shepherds' warning!" Before the more precise meteorology that we today take for granted, people still got pretty good at forecasting the weather! Certain features of the sky lent themselves to memorable weather patterns in the minds of observant onlookers. We pay attention to what we want.
